The way that the author describes toil and labor you would think that work was part of the curse. In fact, many people view labor as a necessary thing that came after sin was committed. The reality is that Adam and Eve were always called to work. They were placed in the Garden to work the land. It was a good thing that they received this work assignment.
The Fall didn't create work, the fall created work with diminished results. It created harder labor because not everything goes perfectly as it did in Eden. We also now face what seems unending work. You spend time mowing the lawn only to turn around and see the grass mow and the need to mow again. You pull weeds in the garden only to have pull more later. You spend a long time cleaning your house for a birthday party only to see a bigger mess to clean up after the party. You put in 40 hours a week, try to enjoy a weekend off, only to go back to the job on Monday for another 40 hours. For some going to work is something they look forward. To others it is a dread. Yet, even the perfect job will have things we don't enjoy or seasons that are tense. Let's not forget the principle of Sabbath or rest that God created into our week from creation. We feel we have too much to do and no time to rest. God invites us into weekly rest because He knows what is good for us.
The best thing we can do is to give God glory for the fruits of our labor and try to enjoy them the best we can. Can we be reminded the value of good days labor? Can we appreciate the mowed yard or clean house even if it is only for a moment?
