The return of Moses and Aaron to Egypt sets up an interesting dynamic. While Moses is the leader Aaron is the one who speaks. It also appears that it is Aaron that shows the signs that were to be performed. Aaron was not there when God spoke to Moses, he is recounting from Moses what God had said and done.
Would Moses have been better off if he had simply trusted God and did the job as God commanded without objecting to the point of God sending Aaron? In our modern day a leader would look weak if He could not speak for himself. Pharaoh didn't have anyone speak for him. God was gracious in sending Aaron as help, but Moses should have just trusted God
An argument could be made that we could feel a bit bad for Aaron. Aaron seems to be doing the work and Moses we know gets the credit. Before we think, "poor Aaron" we have to remember that with the leadership role of Moses came a heavy burden that we will see Moses bearing regarding the people he is supposed to lead. They were called by God as a "stiff-necked people". While Aaron could complain that he is not getting credit he also will have the possibility of saying "I'm just the spokesman" when the problems and complaints come and point them to the leader Moses. As we continue reading in Exodus look carefully at this relationship between Aaron and Moses.
