Lot got caught up in trouble of Sodom. He was captured along with all of his possessions. Don't miss who rescued him. Uncle Abraham went out with his army of 318 and rescued Lot. He defeated a nation with his own little army and brought back Lot, the possessions, and all the people who were captured. Abraham is already showing signs of being a great nation- he has won a military victory. Abraham won
because God was on his side.
Melchizedek is a priest and king that Abraham met and gave a tithe to. Melchizedek is a name that you probably know well if you have been coming to Sunday evening service. Melchizedek was a priest, and later Jesus is shown as High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek lived long before the Levitical priest line, and his line allows Jesus to be a King (from Judah) and a Priest (even though he was not a Levite).
Don't miss Abraham's choice. He is offered wealth by the King of Sodom as reward for rescuing them. He refused because Abraham does not want anyone to be able to take credit for his success or blessings but God alone. This is a great example of a man who was so focused on God that he wanted nothing interfering with God receiving credit in his life. Abraham could have easily justified that the money was earned because he rescued the people. But he did not want anyone to ever have anything to hold over him or say that they are the reason for Abraham's success instead of God alone.
