Abraham had waited a long time for a son, now God is asking him to sacrifice that son. The same faith that caused Abraham to move from his homeland and go where God would show him is at play again as Abraham and Isaac journeyed to the place God was calling him to make the hardest decision of his life.
Isaac is not a baby or likely a small kid at this time. He is the one who carries the wood. He asks the question about where the animal is to sacrifice. He could have been as old as in his 20's at this point in time. The reality is that he demonstrates a lot of faith in God and trust in his dad as well. It is quite possible that if Isaac chose to, he could have fought off his father to prevent what was happening. Abraham is old, Isaac is young- there is a high likelihood that he could have escaped. What Abraham was called to do was not doubt the toughest thing he could be asked to do. He had trust in God. He may have even reasoned that somehow, someway God would bring his son back because he was the child of promise.
God
counted Abraham's actions as obedience and stopped him just short of the actual sacrifice. God proved a replacement animal to be the sacrifice instead of Isaac. This was on the 3rd of the journey. For the days of the journey Abraham was counting his son as dead because of what was to happen, but on that 3rd day it was like his son was given new life. Down the road God the Father will call for another sacrifice, but this time instead of calling someone else it will the sacrifice of His own Son. And Jesus, though he could stop it should he desire, prayed "not my will but your will be done" and laid down his life on the cross.
