The people "worked with all their heart". They wanted to see the walls rebuilt. They desired to see what God was doing to come to fruition. But the walls were not going to build themselves. They had a call and they had a desire to see the walls rebuilt, but they also rolled up their sleeves and got to work. How often do we really want to see something happen, but we are unwilling to work at it with all our heart? If you want something that is in line with God's will then pray and ask God but also roll up your sleeves and do the work God enables you to do. The walls were not going to build themselves. God's church is not going to build itself. We must pray, we must seek God, and we must put in the work with all our heart as God leads us.
We also see they faced opposition. Building the walls is a great mission, but if the walls get torn back down the work seems in vain. Nehemiah had half the men doing the work and half the men standing guard. Half the men were building, and half were standing by to protect the work being done. We as a church do not face much physical opposition that we have to stand against in our work, but we do face spiritual opposition. Satan would love to tear down everything God is building up here. That is why it is so important that we have our prayer warriors standing guard and protecting the ministry in prayer. Every Christian should be a man or woman of prayer, so even the workers should be in prayer.
Perhaps there are specific ministries you may not have the strength for or don't feel particularly gifted for. That is okay- let the others do that work. But you can be praying for them, praying for the work being done, praying for the fruit to show from what is taking place. Sometimes in church you may one of the workers doing the work of a ministry. But if that is not you in a particular area let me encourage you to be the prayer warrior supporting the work that is being done. We stand shoulder to shoulder- working and praying- serving and protecting- to build Christ's church as he leads us.
