This chapter is an example of quick snapshots of wisdom. There is much to see and it helpful to read it through a couple of times to pick up the insights we can gather.
Verses 4-5 are a reminder that work ethic matters. Not everything we do has to be hard work, but in everything we do we should work hard. It would be a misunderstanding to the think that work was a result of the course. Adam and Eve were placed in the garden to work it from the beginning of creation. Work was a pleasure. Work became harder after the fall because they had to work harder than ever with worse results than ever. God has made us with a need to be productive and work and we should honor God in what we do. In a world of increasing laziness, we need to teach and demonstrate the dignity of work as a God-given gift. In truth there are some terrible jobs (and terrible bosses who make a job awful) but work itself is a good thing.
Verse 11 is a great verse- "The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life". Our words matter. Our words spoken from a heart right with God can bring refreshing and encouragement to those we interact with. Even words of rebuke or correction coming from a righteous person with a pure heart can be seen as a gift to help us be changed for the better. Hard truths spoken from a gentle and humble person can be life changing. Our words say a lot about our hearts and our relationships with God. We see this throughout Proverbs 10, and it is a theme throughout the Bible.
