Wisdom is available but it must be sought. I think as we are considering the need for wisdom, we must seek it and regard it as precious. v.3-5 use some words that show a search for wisdom, not just a passive hoping to become wise. There is an assumption that wisdom comes with age (and there is some truth to that). But wisdom is also available to us no matter what our age and experience. Wisdom can be sought today not just gained tomorrow. In the NIV it says, "call out for insight", "cry aloud for understanding", "search for it as hidden treasure". Gaining wisdom is not passively aging and maturing, but rather actively living and pursuing wisdom in relationship with God.
How can we gain wisdom? Prayer- seek God and cry out to the LORD for insight and wisdom. Scripture- God's Word is full of wisdom and insight. Wise Christian examples- I believe that we can learn from the wisdom of others and their experience. Think of the strong Christians who are living righteous lives and ask them for insight and words of wisdom.
God is not stingy when it comes to giving out wisdom. When we realize that we need it we can seek it without fear of God neglecting our requests. Be encouraged by the words of James 1:5- "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." God will give us wisdom, but we must not let wisdom be mere ideas or platitudes; it must be seen in our actions.
