Solomon is a wise man giving advice to his children. He is helping them understand the paths that they should go. He is teaching them the framework of wisdom that will allow their lives to move forward into God-honoring pursuits in life and avoid evil and temptation. The advice he give is good and worth listening.
However, we must also be aware that despite Solomon's wisdom and good words there were areas where he fell woefully short in living according to wisdom. Solomon gives excellent wisdom in verse 7 where he says, "Guard your heart". He says this and understands it to be true. It is great advice.
However, Solomon did not practice this in all areas of his life. He let his guard down when it came to marrying many wives, especially those who worshipped idols. In fact, this was a violation of the command in Deut. 17:17- "He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold." This was not wise and caused issues in Solomon's reign and personal life.
It is great for us to give words of advice to others, but we must be careful that we also live according to that wisdom in our own lives. We can give people words of wisdom, but we need to be sure that we also "practice what we preach". What a disaster it is when someone shares wisdom to others falls flat into foolishness by not living what they said. It is hard to understand because they clearly knew better.
