Verses 16-19 are verses to take a close look. When you see a list of things that the LORD hates we would be wise to take note and stay far from these things. There are couple of things that we really need to consider in looking at this list.
First, this is not a list of specific actions, but rather categories. For example dishonesty can be lying on a witness stand at a courthouse or it can be telling a "little white lie" to your parents. Both are issues of dishonesty, but one in the world's view seems more acceptable than the other. We must be aware of calling out the sin in others, but ignoring it in ourselves just because we didn't do exactly the same thing.
The second thing we need to keep in mind is that there is a thing that God expects of us instead of just avoiding wrong. God doesn't hate lying just because he decided he doesn't like it. God hates lying because he values honesty and truth. He doesn't just hate when people deliberately stir up trouble among others. He hates it because we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves. For everything that God stands against there is a positive counter that He stands for. The faithful Christian life is not merely about avoiding wrong things, but faithfully doing the right things for God's glory.
