August 31 Psalm 119:1-48

There is an important question asked in this section. How can a young man keep his way pure? The answer is actually quite simple- keeping God's Word. The answer also applies to old men, young women, and old women as well. This is a simple yet profound statement. The first question we need to consider in our day is this- do I care about purity? Holiness is a word that most people ignore. The idea of doing what is right no matter what everyone else is doing is not always considered as much as it should be. Rather, most people want to know "what can I get away with and still be okay in my salvation status". This type of thinking shows that holiness is not considered. When we are more concerned about not offending other people more than we are about not offending God, we find ourselves in a very tough spot.

There is an important aspect about purity and living for God as well. Just avoiding wrong things is not all there is to live as a Christian. Our lifestyle choices should involve us making choices to avoid certain things that go against God's will. But there are also certain things we are called to do as Christians that must also be considered. Christian's who pursue living according to God's Word know that it is not just a matter avoidance ("thou shalt not"), but also a matter of proper action in response to God's Word (love your neighbor as yourself, make disciples, etc.)

We are called to be holy because God is Holy. God's holiness will not change, and neither will our need to pursue holy living.
