There are many people still today with the same attitude "Who Is the LORD, that I should obey Him". This statement can have very different meanings and sometimes we have to question what the heart behind the question is.
1. Some people actually don't know the LORD. We are talking about God and encouraging them to stop a sin, and they really don't know what we are talking about. Who is the LORD could be a very sincere and honest question. We cannot assume in our current day that everyone we meet in our community knows who Jesus is. We cannot assume they know what the Bible teaches. Some people don't know anything at all. Some people know something about Jesus or the Bible, but it is not correct. These people may be open to the Gospel if just simply taught.
2. The prideful statement "Who Is the LORD? I don't know Him". This could be a statement that is the equivalent of "I do what I want", "I make my own rules". There are some who don't know God because they think they are God. Pharaoh may fit in this category literally because there was some teaching in Egypt that equated Pharaoh with a god. I am sure there was a level of pride because of his refusal to obey despite the plagues.
I think Pharaoh is a combination of both. He probably did not really know who Yahweh was. There were many gods in Egypt and in surrounding areas that could make it hard to keep things straight. Sadly, he knew of many gods but did not actually know God. I think there was both ignorance of God's identity and arrogance that kept him from truly knowing and revering God as he should.
We personally need to be very clear on who Jesus is. That doesn't come from our opinions or what is sort of trendy in regard to what people are thinking today. We need to know Jesus based on the Gospel accounts and we need to know him personally in relationship with Jesus. There is not a Biblical Jesus and also my own personal Jesus based on how I feel about him or what I want him to be. There is only one Jesus, and you need to know both about Jesus (Biblical knowledge) and you need to know him personally (faith commitment/personal relationship).
