He who is slow to wrath has great understanding,
But he who is impulsive exalts folly. (verse 29). This verse reminds us that in relationships with people the easiest and quickest response is not always the best. Having patience with people can be a challenge. Having grace towards people is not always easy, but God sets us a great example. The Bible frequently talks about God's patience with us. I have personally experienced God's patience and I am sure you have as well. Patience is not unlimited, and there are times where accountability is called for. This is always measured, careful, and just. Impulsive reactions often lead to misunderstandings and more difficulties. Impulsive reactions sometimes produce foolishness in response, where as the slow to anger person responds with more wisdom.
A second point relates to the idea of discernment. We need to think carefully and examine ideas before we accept them. "The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps." (v. 15). We must take every idea to heart and examine it for truth and wisdom. This is discernment. This is the ability to take whatever someone says and carefully consider if it is right or wrong rather than merely accepting it. Just because it was on the internet does not make something true.
Back in the Bible times the Bereans were given a special recognition for examining all of Paul's teachings with their Scriptures to see if what he was saying was right. They didn't just take Paul at face value, they examined it for themselves. We are wise to do likewise with what we hear today. Consider it up against the lens of Scripture. Is this idea in line with God says is right? Beware of anyone who does not want you to check what they say or demands you simply trust them. We need to teach our kids to be discerning in a culture where false information is both prevalent and in many ways convincing.
