May 22 Psalm 19
How do you view God's Word? David looked at the words of God as beautiful and trustworthy. He saw wisdom in these words far beyond what he could have ever made up for himself. He also understands that God's Word, when properly applied, produces good outcomes in our lives. Things like renewal, wisdom, and gladness or joy can come from the Words of God. God's beautiful Words are the path to a beautiful life. I did not mean easy, pain-free, or always fun life. I am talking about a life of purpose and meaning.
When we read Scripture, we must truly appreciate what we hold in our hands. It is not just a book that we must read because our devotional chart says we should. It is the opportunity to hear from the God of the universe who knows all things and has created all things. I hope that we all can continue to come to the Bible with a sense of appreciation for the fact that God has spoken. I also hope, like David, that when we get into God's Word it will affect our words. I hope that when we see what is important to God it becomes important to us as well.
Bible reading without action and application is like reading a cookbook but not actually cooking the recipe. You may have gained some knowledge, but at the end of the day you will still be hungry.
