Psalm 71
July 14 Psalm 71
I hope you have been able to keep up with the reading of Psalms.
David asks God not to turn his back on him or cast him away when he is old and his strength is gone. He doesn't want to lose his close relationship with God when he is in a position where maybe he cannot serve the LORD or do the things he once did physically as well. As we get older, we may start slowing down physically and this could cause us to think we are not as useful to LORD as we would like to be. My youngest son told his classmates that I was 60 years old at school because I have some gray in my beard. There are some days after I have done some sort of physical work or have played sports with the kids that I feel like he is correct.
Our bodies slow down as we age. But I have also learned something valuable- the older I get I may not be able to do as much as I used to as well, but I have so much more life experience and maturity in my relationship with the LORD. I have gained wisdom I did not have when I was in prime physical shape.
In verse 15- David says, "My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long". The older we get the more we can speak of God's goodness, love, and work in our lives. When we are young, we may have more strength, but we don't have as much wisdom. When we are older, we may not have the strength we once had, but we have grown stronger in wisdom. When we get older, we may not be able to do some of the things we once did, but we have a story to share of the goodness of God over the many years of our life. You always have something to offer in service to the LORD, even if it is just your voice and your testimony.
