June 10 Psalm 38
David is overwhelmed. He feels the stresses and the struggles very heavily on his shoulders. He knows that there is a light at the end of the tunnel because he trusts in God, but he is not sure how long the tunnel is and it seems like it goes on for miles. The Psalms give us a glimpse into honesty before God. It gives us a glimpse into the fact that not every day do we feel great. There will be times where we feel overwhelmed. That does not mean that something is wrong with us or that we have weak faith. It is simply a reminder that we are human and we live in a chaotic world. If someone was to give you the address for the Camp Chaos campground the directions would likely just say "Earth".
Sometimes we feel more overwhelmed because we think that a Christian should never struggle. We think that as Christians we should have it all together all the time. We don't think sadness and stress fit into being a good Christian. These things will be part of our lives, it is how we choose to deal with them that makes a difference. It is who we trust in the midst of the chaos that gives us hope. Think about the "heroes" of the Bible. They all felt overwhelmed, confused, incapable, misunderstood at some point in time. If you feel overwhelmed at times you are in good company. Our hope is in a God who has never been caught off guard or unsure what to do. At the same time, He understands what it feels like when we are stressed because in Gethsemane he felt the weight of the cross in his near future- 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38).
