Psalm 82

July 25   Psalm 82

This Psalm is describing the fact that God as THE JUDGE will hold to account the human judges who have presided over Israel.  The verse is not referring to idols in verse 6.  Rather it is a reference to the fact that God had given these people authority to hold account to justice the nation as God had deemed appropriate.  The problem was that justice was not always applied to everyone equally as it should have been.

God in particular was calling them out for the vulnerable people who were being mistreated and not being cared for properly.  Orphans and widows in particular are two groups that God specifically mentions that He cares for their difficulties and wants to see them properly cared for.
 Psalm 68:5:
"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling."

God's desire was for justice to be applied fairly for everyone no matter what.  This was not fully happening, so God had call them to do better as judges and rulers.  God still wants us to look out for those around us who need help.
