May 12 Psalm 9
David thanks God with all of his heart. The Psalms are a mixture of David pleading for helping and David praising God for His provision. The idea of David praising with all of his heart is important because this is not a simple lip service to God. This is a man with an appreciation for God that is truly heart felt. I think this same ability to praise God with his whole heart is also what helped him to trust God with his whole heart when things were not good, or he was in danger.
David understands that God is not shaken by our circumstances. He is an unshakeable God who never steps off his throne. Our circumstances may be good one day and rough the next. What never changes is God. This makes God a refuge for us. A refuge is a place of stability, protection, calm. It is a place we can run to when we are in trouble knowing that the refuge itself will not be in trouble. When we look to God in our turbulence in life we will find in Him calm and stability. We should not let our fear, anxiety, or emotions take our focus off of God. Rather- our focus on God should see us bring all of our troubles to Him.
