Psalm 95
Psalm 95
This Psalm reminds of two things. One is a truth we must embrace. The other is warning we must heed. The first thing that we need to remember that worship of the LORD is always warranted. We often think of worship in response to what God did in particular for our lives. These are certainly worthy of praise and recognition. At the same time, we are called to worship the LORD not just based on His actions but based simply on who He is. He is the King above all gods. As Christians we know that there is really only one true God. There are so called gods, but they are not real. Not only is our God real, but also, He is far above and beyond whatever made up concept of false gods can present against Him.
The second thing we see in this Psalm is the warning from the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. This was in response to their lack of faith. The 12 spies went into the Promised Land and reported "yes"- the land is good and "no" there is no chance we can win the land from the "giants" who live there. On the surface this was 10 men acting like they were saying they were weak when in truth they were saying God was not strong enough to defeat their enemies. Caleb and Joshua disagreed and said with God on their side they would win. 40 years of wandering was the consequence so the generation who lacked faith would not be allowed to go the Promised Land (except Caleb and Joshua in their generation because they had trust in God).
Sometimes we cause ourselves disruptions and delays in our lives because we don't trust God to do what is right in the moment. Rather than trusting God's power we only focus on our own weaknesses and deficiencies. Worshipping God for who He is and keeping that in mind will give us more opportunities to worship Him for what He does because our worship helps us to step in faith in hard things, which causes us to see God work in our lives in powerful ways.
