Psalm 79
July 22 Psalm 79
v. 8 requests that God does not hold past sins against them. There were many times where Israel had gone astray, and I think this statement acknowledges that. At the same time there is a gracious and merciful God who was willing to forgive them when they turned back to Him. There is an element that remembering our past mistakes can keep us from future trouble. We should learn our lesson.
There is also an element that we can be anchored to our past mistakes and hindered from moving forward. We don't feel forgiven, and we feel stuck in the past. We may feel like what was done disqualifies from what is next. If God has forgiven us, He truly has forgiven us. He is moving us forward in freedom. We must do the same thing for ourselves. Sometimes what God has forgiven we hold onto and keep ourselves from moving forward. If God has forgiven, so should we.
